Dressing for Cold Weather: 5 Must Haves

Happy New Year everyone! I know this has most likely been said a million times BUT where did 2016 go?? The years just fly by quicker and quicker ever since I graduated college. I can’t be the only one who feels that way right? However, I am so excited for the new year! I can’t wait to see what 2017 brings. I have so many plans in my mind for what I want to happen but as they say, we plan and God laughs.

5 Winter Weather Must Haves // The Krystal Diaries

Anyway,  I know one thing 2017 has brought already and that’s freezing cold weather to New York. Winters can be brutal here – freezing cold temps, snow storms, extreme wind, and ice everywhere. I always question those who say winter is their favorite season because it is for sure my least favorite. Even though I have no love for winter, I do love good winter fashion pieces. Winter fashion has to pull triple duty – be cute, practical, and keep me warm.

5 Winter Weather Must Haves // The Krystal Diaries

1. Simple Black Beanie

While I do love most beanies, a black one is usually my go to. It’s probably the New Yorker in me but black goes with everything. When in doubt, throw on black. I never have to worry about a black beanie clashing with anything I’m wearing.

2. Tech Gloves

I received these Echo tech gloves for Christmas and they are the perfect winter accessory. Unfortunately, they are sold out now but I’ve linked some similar ones below. They keep my hands nice and warm but I don’t have to take them off to snap pictures or check on Instagram.

3. Snow Boots

I need snow boots that can blend into the rest of my outfit. Most snow boots scream “Hey look at me I’m snow boots!” and while they may be popular, they don’t really work for me. Tundra boots work perfectly for me because one – they are black, two they blend in the most snow boots possibly can so I don’t have to change out of them when I get to the office. I own the Tundra Ruth pair for about 5 years now and they are my favorite pair I’ve ever owned.

4. Winter Coat with a Hood

When the wind really picks up here, sometimes a hat alone just won’t cut it. I need a coat with a fuzzy hood attached to it. L.L. Bean coats are one of my favorite because they are warm and not bulky. I don’t feel like the little brother in A Christmas Story. I own this one and it has an inside pocket and the outside pockets zip closed – such a convenience!

5. Cute Fuzzy PJs

Who doesn’t love cute fuzzy pajama sets? I always feel like the cold seeps into my bones so even inside my house, I usually still feel cold. Since I can’t just raise the heat all the way up to 90 because I don’t want to pay a high oil bill adult problems, I settle for fuzzy pajama sets with cute matching socks or slippers.

  3. Totally agree that tech gloves and a hooded coat are must haves. I’ve also found that scarves really help.

  8. This is definitely a helpful post for me because I just moved to eastern TN from California so I’m still learning how to live in a cold state! It’s freezing! I came back from winter holidays with a bunch of new winter gear!

Definitely! It funny after I moved from snow to minimal snow you can’t find the same warmth in the winter gear. I do however have a coat with a hood and several hats! Techy glove are also a fun item I have but lack in the snow boot department. My fuzz pajamas however are used all year round as I do like to stay warm.

  14. I’m totally with you on numbers 4 & 5. Working in downtown Chicago in the winter is brutal. You NEED a hood to shield you from that “hawk” while your hanging on light poles trying not to get swept away by it. And yes, fuzzy pjs are def. required.

  15. I don’t have any snow boots or fuzzy PJs. I’m pretty sure the winter will pass before I get around to buying either of those things. Lol.

  16. I need the L.L. Bean jacket…My NYE weekend was pretty great. On New Year’s Day I had family over which was great.

  17. I like getting laid back wearing huge tashirts of my Dada and my pjs during cold days. And sipping hot coffee or mocha and just next to him both reading books, 😊

  35. Cool list to keep you cozy! Love the black beanie too, for the versatility. Oh yes, fuzzy pyjama’s rock my list of winter faves!

  36. The older you get, the more kids you have, these I have learned makes time go by even quicker! Great list, although living in Florida we only have a handful of cold days. At the moment we are only experiencing “winter” on the weekends. This weekend it’s going to be in the 40’s for the highs, next week back up to 70! We’re all going to be sick!

  37. Fuzzy pjs are a total must for me!!! I love them! Another thing I really need are earmuffs! Awesome list!

  38. We don’t get much of a winter here in So Cal, well as compared to New York. 🙂 But I love a set of fuzzy pjs.

  42. Yup! I would have to agree with this list, these should always be in your closet during the winter. Especially if you live in areas where the snow goes up to 4-5 inches deep.

    Posted 1.6.17 Reply
  43. I totally fell that this post was meant for me. I just never know how to dress warm! I don’t like all the layers and avoid any thing warm in my wardrobe. As a result, I’m always cold. I think I have to set up a goal for 2017 to buy more warm clothes!

Yup, I agree with everything on this list! When I moved from MD to GA I knew that I was giving up my favorite season (Fall). I even had to return a nice pair of snow boots that I had purchased and never wore :-.( I’ll be back home this coming weekend though so I’ll be able to enjoy the past time for a few days!
