How to Pack in a Carry On ft. Vera Bradley & An Exciting Announcement

Planning a trip can be stressful at times. From picking accommodations, to figuring out who to get to a location, tying to get the biggest bang for your buck, language barriers, jet lag, the list goes on. #firstworldproblems I know. Trying to figure out how to pack adds to that stress sometimes too. Especially trying to pack in a carry on for a week long trip. Don’t travel bloggers make it look all so pretty and simple sometimes?

How To Pack In A Carry On Bag ft. Vera Bradley // The Krystal Diaries

Packing doesn’t always have to be stressful and can even be enjoyable. I actually love the process of planning out what I’m going to bring with me on a vacation and packing. Truth is I used to be such an overpacker. Like going to a Caribbean island and bringing enough flip flops to match each bathing suit for everyday PLUS a different pair of shoes for each night, all the makeup and hair products in the world kind of over packer. Here I share what’s in my makeup travel bag. I was that girl checking in at the airport and taking things out of my suitcase putting them into my husband’s because I was over the 50lb limit holding up the line – sorry if you were ever behind me! So ridiculous right? Who needs all that to go lay on a beach all day??

Recently, I’ve finally mastered the art of packing in a carry on. It’s so much simpler than I thought! Here are my tips:

Plan Your Outfits Ahead of Time

Like a month or so ahead of time if this isn’t a last minute vacation. Take into account the climate and temperatures for where you’ll be traveling to and what you’ll be doing.

Create a Pinterest board for yourself, take pictures of what clothes you want to bring and pin them, you can keep your board secret if you’d like. Actually seeing everything laid out on a Pinterest board makes it so much simpler to see what you’re going to pack. Do you really need 7 pairs of jeans for each night? Maybe you didn’t even realize you were planning on bringing that many. Instead bring 3 pairs. Pack two and wear one on the plane.

Pack mix and match pieces trying to stick to a color scheme and accessorize. Maybe you can re-wear a top with different accessories to change up your look, add a necklace or scarf.

Roll your clothes tightly and use packing cubes or airtight bags. Wear your thicker/heavier items like jackets and boots instead of packing them.

Use every nook & cranny you can. Stuff socks & underwear into shoes and odd spaces.

Downsize Those Liquids

Did you know you can bring as many liquids under 3 ounces as you can fit into a quart sized clear bag? I didn’t know this for years! So I used to pack my entire bottle of shampoo & conditioner into my suitcase…hello 50lbs.

Instead get yourself a clear zippered bag, I use this one  and tiny travel size containers, I bought these and these from Amazon and I love them! If you’re a little nutty like me, you can even label the bottles.

Pour your liquids into these and voila you can now fit all your liquids into your carry on without a problem! I do this for everything from my face wash to shampoo to night creams.

Pick Your Luggage Wisely

Most airlines allow a carry on sized suitcase plus one personal item. Use that to your full advantage! I’ve always been a fan of spinner suitcases because they are just so easy to roll around but I’ve never had one myself and have borrowed from others.

I finally now have my own, the Grande Santiago Flora Hardside Spinner  for my travels courtesy of Vera Bradley! It has the cutest pattern on it, three compartments on the inside to make packing and organizing a breeze and has a TSA compliant lock on it – just in case the airline runs out of overhead space and needs to check it in. It’s lightweight which makes it easy for me to roll around myself without needing any help.

For the personal item I like to use either a soft oversized tote or weekender bag. This Triple Compartment Travel Bag from Vera Bradley has enough compartments and slots to fit everything extra you need. A soft bag makes it so much easier to stuff under the seat in front of you! I keep anything I need to be easily accessible in there, up top or in side pockets like passport, confirms, reading material, snacks. Anything else, like an extra change of clothes, makeup bag, I fit into the bottom of the bag.

See it is simpler to pack for a vacation in a carry on than I once thought! Now we can all be packing experts together!

Now the Exciting Announcement!

I don’t think I can go back to checked luggage now that I have been traveling with a carryon only. I went to Paris with one carry one for me and one for my husband. We went for 10 days, and it was April, so there was alot of heavier clothes. Not to mention, I traveled with a wedding dress, shoes, a bouquet and my husband had his suit, shoes and the like. Love articles like these!

I am exclusively team carry-on and always try to fight with gate agents when they make me check a bag. I totally agree with you about packing in a color scheme and rolling your clothes. I stick to a theme for the weekend, wear my hoodie onto the plane, and keep it simple. This practice helps me out even when I am doing some last minute packing because I know what colors to focus on.

A color scheme makes mix & matching easier! Luckily I haven’t had gate agents try to check my bag…yet
