Why I’ll Never Do a Detox Cleanse

Recently, a company reached out to me asking me to promote their detox cleanse. This was just one of many companies who has reached out to me promising a miracle cure to detox my body. Um excuse me but who said my body needed to be detoxed?

Detox, juice, and tea cleanses are really popular right now. Do a quick Google search and you will find plenty of companies promoting their cleanses with claims of helping you lose weight, resetting your body and eliminating toxins.

Isn’t the weight being lost just water weight? As soon as the detox is finished and normal eating is resumed the weight will come right back.

Also, these cleanses are extremely low in calories. I’m pretty sure a calorie deficit can’t be healthy. Don’t we need other vitamins and nutrients found in other foods as well besides just fruits, veggies or tea?

As someone who exercises on a somewhat regular basis and works 40 hours a week, I could never starve myself like that with a cleanse. I need those calories and nutrients to give me energy and keep me going.  

I have been personally approached by some believing they are helping their bodies by doing these extreme detoxes, sometimes even for 30, 60 or 90 days straight! I’m just not convinced yet that drinking detox juices or teas will do anything additional that my body does not already do on its own.

I’m a believer of eating healthy on a regular basis, moderation, and treating myself to donuts when I please. I am not claiming to be an expert or a nutritionist (because I’m not) but something about taking in such a little amount of calories on a liquid only diet just does not sit well me. It sounds more like starvation to me than cleansing and “detoxifying.”

I like my food, both healthy and unhealthy. I like moderation. I will never do a detox cleanse and you’ll never see me promoting one here or anywhere on social media.

What are your thoughts on detox juice and tea cleanses?

P.S. I drink both green juices and teas but never as a detox or as prolonged meal replacements.

    I think they can be beneficial if done correctly. Sometimes my body just needs help to jumpstart it to a better way of clean eating and helping it get rid of toxins can make me feel so much better. I think the best ones out there are teaching more of a clean eating. (I have offered ones before, but found they are too much for most people. ) That is why I switched to a Healthy and Fit Jump Start to help people just make small changes from right where they are.

    i don’t think my body needs detoxing, and if it ‘did’, the way i would do it would be to eat super healthily, not with juice or tea. and if i thought i needed a ‘detox’ it would really mean i needed to stop eating like crap and start eating well.. not because i think my body has something in it that drinking tea or juice for a few days will get rid of. either way, i just don’t think it’s healthy to only drink or eat one thing for several days to a week. moderation is definitely key.

    I turn into Hulk’s cousin when I don’t eat…Detoxes are not my thing! I agree with your points and drink tea and juices/smoothies as well, but for enjoyment not to “cleanse” my body. Tal xo

    I think that there are detox plans out there that can be beneficial but they have to be done the right way, which really means working with a dietician to work on what specifically your body needs because you’ll get sound advice on where you need to make sure you’re still getting the adequate nutrients you need. However, I totally agree that juice cleanses and cleanses that really deprive you are a no go because you’re really just stressing your body out.

    I have thought about doing a detox cleanse because I know some people that have tried it and had great results. I have never done one yet though. I am not sure I could starve my body either. I like to eat of course in moderation. I feel that working out will work better to help you lose weight then doing a cleanse. But I could be wrong. Great opinion on them!

    This post is so refreshing. I don’t agree with the detox cleanses or teas either. It’s a gimmick for a reason and it won’t give you long term results. I don’t see how it could be healthy at all.

    I’m with you. I don’t believe in detoxes, either. I feel healthy, I eat healthy, doctor says I am healthy–I think detoxes are a fad that always comes and goes in different forms.

    I am a huge fan of eating healthy organic food and drinking lots of clean water. No detox can make up for eating pourly on a day to day basis.

    I don’t do detox teas and such. I do enjoy detox water blends that I make myself, but I still eat balanced normal meals everyday and try to exercise. I feel like these liquid detoxes are no good.

    I actually don’t do detox (unless I ate lots of very greasy food – my cheat day, and I have to release it) then I would replenish it with lots of fluids.. but doing detox regular basis – nope.

    I love the idea of doing a detox and almost always feel better afterwards! but, overall I do eat pretty healthy but, I find that I do have water weight I need to get rid of as well! Great post!

    I think the point of a lot of cleanses is not (or should not) necessarily be to lose weight but instead to reset your body and get all the toxins out, especially with water or tea cleanses (which I’ve never really done). Juice cleanses, on the other hand, are great in my opinion to eat only raw foods, get all your vitamins and nutrition AND still put the calories into your body. You can make juices with a hefty amount of calories so you don’t have to starve your body. I think, like a lot of things, when you really research what and why you’re doing something and do it moderation, it can be beneficial.

    Those sorts of “cleanses” always make me angry- not like “I can’t believe you’re doing that” but in the “dude, I’m Hangry- angry..” That really can’t be good! I’ll stick to my goal of clean/healthy eating too!

    Interesting point of view….like you, I eat healthy and exercise regularly. I have also benefited from doing cleanses in the past. Done correctly, they are good and beneficial. It’s not about magically losing weight, but taking care of the “inside” of the body 🙂

    I don’t typically do them, but I think they can be beneficial for some people. Not if it’s a way to lose weight. Because, obviously, it’s not sustainable. But, I do think it helps people feel like they’ve cleaned out their system. (Especially after a wedding weekend with one too many cocktails!) Haha.

    I’ve done detox daily program once and my experience was horrible! After 8 juices a day the next I felt myself broken and weak, woke up with a terrible headache and was feeling myself sick all day long. It was just like having a hangover! Idk, maybe it’s just not my cup of tea, but I will never try it again.

    I appreciate this differing opinion from the norm. I’ve never tried a cleanse and I’m in no rush to. However, I could maybe try a 3 day cleanse if the intention was to kind of reset and then start eating more healthy

    I am totally against detoxes. Our bodies are completely capable of detoxing themselves with just healthy eating and exercise – no cleanses necessary.
    I lost 100lbs and got myself healthy with not a detox in sight. There was still pizza and ice cream too!

    I’m with you. Detoxing, especially with regard to a product you have to buy in order to “detox” is merely a marketing ploy. Our bodies are quit efficient at filtering out potentially harmful substances. Of course there are exceptions, but those things wouldn’t be affected by a “detox” anyway. The smart thing is to eat a balanced diet and drink plenty of water. Get plenty of sleep and keep yourself active. These are healthy things. Detoxing is not.

    I personally would never try them either. So sick of seeing celebrities promoting that Fit Tea stuff. I heard it does absolutely nothing and it isn’t cheap either. Infused water is better than those stupid detox teas, etc. lol All is good in moderation!
